ELLIOT SET THE cup down and sucked the wedge of lime before adding, “That might be a good thing, but you should know my mouth’s gotten me in trouble more times than I can count.”

“And one of my lovely problems is that I react without thinking. It’s probably a genetic fault. Bad wiring or body chemistry or something. I can’t figure out why I’m so impulsive, but the laundry list of regrets continues to grow. I’d like to say I’m working on it, but from an outsider’s perspective that’s highly debatable.” She shrugged and drank some more beer.

Elliot chuckled. “Now that our dirty laundry is out in the open, is there anything else I should know about you?”

“That’s a loaded question,” Tawny said with a laugh.

Keeping at least some of her cards hidden felt like a necessity at this point in their new game. The alcohol was busy traveling from her stomach and into her bloodstream and tingles and the beginnings of fuzzy-headedness were starting to affect her. Damn, he’s gorgeous, her brain kept saying.

“You should ask a more specific question if you want an answer from me. Kind of like twenty questions.”

“Or truth or dare?” he suggested back.

Tawny shifted on her feet and reached for the tequila. “Dare adds another level I’m not sure we’re ready for. How about truth or truth for now?”

“Okay. You go first,” Elliot said.

She tapped her finger on the bottle and didn’t open it. “Are you hungry? Because I am.”

“I could eat.”

“Good. Would you like to join me for dinner with my family?”

“Will they mind if you bring a plus-one?” Elliot asked.

“Not at all,” she said.

“All right,” he agreed. “But I’m going to change out of my wet clothes and find a shirt first.”

She couldn’t help herself as her gaze dropped to his unbelievably ripped and tanned chest. The temptation to touch him nearly raised her hand. A shirt was definitely a good idea.

“Meet you at my brother’s fifth-wheel trailer.” Tawny pointed at Cameron’s campsite, then asked, “Can I give you a hand? I may be short, but I’m strong enough to lean on.”

“I’m good. See you over there in a few minutes.” Elliot limped out of her camping area and although he looked a little unstable, she thought he was going to be all right.

Tawny finished unpacking and organizing. She did a quick change out of the swimsuit and back into her clothes and hiking boots. After grabbing the bowl of pasta salad out of her cooler, she went to check in with Sam, Jensen, and the kids.

“How’s it going in there?” Tawny asked after knocking on the screen door.

Sam climbed down the steps of the camper and gave Tawny a tired and mildly perturbed look. “We might be headed home soon. Now Jensen’s not feeling well and I think he has a fever.”

“Seriously? That’s awful.”

“Tell me about it,” Sam agreed. “I’m sure it’s only a matter of hours before Morgan has the bug too.”

“Darn it,” Tawny said. “How about you? Are you feeling okay?”

“So far, so good.
